Where do Fallen Leaves Go?

Some facts from Sunday’s New York Times:

  • Westchester sends over 85,000 tons of leaves to rural areas each year.
  • The leaves are turned into compost and topsoil, some of which is shipped back to Westchester.

  • It costs $40 a ton to ship the leaves—as opposed to the $80 a ton it costs to dispose of them at the county's incinerator.

  • Westchester recycles 47% of its solid waste, the most of any county in the state.

  • The County Board of Legislators questions the current policy, which uses more than 900 trucks a year to transport the leaves.
