Although it's impossible to miss the huge hill in the center of Croton Point Park, it somehow took me years to realize that there were trails across it. Perhaps because I had read that the hill was actually a trash heap—on what had originally been a swamp in the point—it still took me awhile to venture onto it. What a pleasant surprise. The hill is covered with a 113 acre meadow full of wild flowers and swaying grasses. Though it is not that high, it affords a stunning vista over Half Moon Bay to the north and the wetlands and river to the south. If only all dumps end up this beautiful!
